I have some great memories of kids/tribe gigs in joburg a long time ago.
I certainly remember the syringa spa gig someone mentioned on here, cant remember what other acts were on that day , but know I was right up the front for the kids set.
Used to regularely to ' The Club ' ( is that what it was called? ) to see asylum kids, saw peach there too, even had a dance with angie one night when the dj played a peach track. Rumour had it, it was run by mates of Robbi's , dunno if that was so.
Asylum kids played two nights on the trot at metalbeat, the place was packed.Great gig.
Again, months later, three floors below at DV8, probably after solid priciples came out.
Cant remember where I first saw Tribe after Tribe , but remember the month long (?) residency at some hotel in rosebank. As a dabbler in synths was very impressed with the keyboard players giant construction set keyboard stand.
One of the most impressive gigs was at a hotel in Hillbrow, Tribe after Tribe and ellamental. I think richard (?) from what colours was on the sound desk. Was impressed by his tape delay and pretty lights on his RTA.
ellamental played first I think , then Robbi came on , bass player and both drummers from the two bands ! Was a huge wall of sound very powerful. Then when it couldnt get any better tim parr came on trading riffs with Robbi. During the 'proper' part of the tribe set , there was the thing with Robbi holding up the parcan/searchlight and the handgrenade mime with the heavily reverbed explosion effect.
Maybe it was just the heady rush of youth , but after twiddling knobs for hundreds of bands on the london circuit for years that still sticks in my mind as one of the most impressive shows. - 22.04.2006 - Leaping Duck
- I also hold the same affection for a band like TAT. I was a club concert promoter for 8 years in Houston and saw many a boring band and even the good ones lack something special that I found one night in 1991. At this point I would trade them all for Robbi and various crews every night of the week. Well maybe some New Orleans stylings during carnival season. Maybe one day I'll see TAT at NOLA Jazzfest!!

- yeah, I remember the gig at the Chelsea hotel in hillbrow too, a great gig. they also used to play at Le Club in Market street, just above the "king of Clubs' which was where wannabe bands had an opportunity to play(how do I know, I was in 1 of those bands with some of TAT's and Ellamental's roadies). I missed the Asylum kids by about 6 months, as I was trying to not have to carry a gun for the Ou Krokodil and co by doing service in the navy( no, not a billy joel pun!)
