Biography

July 1986 Tribe After Tribe arrived in America from South Africa led by charismatic vocalist Robbi Robb, founder and sustainer of the band. Their great music approach has long been considered a blending of heavy psychedelic rock and exotic pagan African rhythms. After a period of constant showcasing and demo sessions they made a cool little album recorded and mixed in ten days. Somehow it landed on Johnny Zazula's of legendary Megaforce Records desk (who first discovered bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Ministry, etc.) and a deal came through right away...

Unfotunately, right at that point, Megaforce Records got into tough negotiations with Atlantic on the very day the album was released and Tribe was caught in the middle of this battle... it all died right there despite all the amount of positive press and for the band, it was so unbelievable to watch the whole thing sink. Through an array of events Tribe got the chance of a lifetime: Pearl Jam wanted them to open on an American leg of the tour... and even without a label supporting them Robbi & co. did not miss it out and - as by many stated - audiences were swept up in a great frenzy by their music and delivery.

Then Johnny Z. of Megaforce got a new deal through Polygram and offered the band to make another album... it was called 'Love Under Will' ... As soon as it got released Pearl Jam invited Tribe to tour in Europe with them. Their video for the song 'Ice Below' got some good play on MTV in Europe and got to number one on the CMJ top 75 charts (for about three weeks). But now at the same time as all this was going down Johnny Z. quickly went through some hardship, couldn't get out of his deal with Polygram and so the ship sank again.

With no records in the stores and no label backing, they did a small tour opening for Saigon Kick and then went home. A song at number one, high praise from prominent critics across the world, being voted best live band of the year by RockHard - all dressed up, with nowhere to go.

A new chapter: Being Robbi one of greatest mystics ever to appear in the history of rock as Johnny Z once stated, hear you the man in his own words describing his friendship and musical experience with Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament.

Robbi:

"Jeff calls up to invite me to go camping in big Sur with him. We had a great time and ended up at Neil Young's farm. I had an amazing with Neil at a fireside. I learned some very important lessons from Mr. Young. He is a true King. Month or two later, Jeff calls me up to jam with him in Seattle along with Richard Stuverud (Fastbacks, Pilot). We jammed for about seven days in a small studio and about 35 songs were written or should I say channeled. Because of Jeff, we were free of that 'money = time = stress'. Still, and because of this feeling of freedom, we made a beautiful record in seven days. Jeff and Sony/Epic decided the record should be released. We called the outfit Three Fish... toured America and were well received by audiences and critics. Hanging with Jeff I learnt things that really changed me - good and bad; on one level I was really glad that I wasn't as famous as Jeff and Eddy Vedder. The amount of bullshit they have to deal with on a daily basis is just not good for any human being. I felt as though I wasn't cut out to play the big star game and retreated from music as a career and focused on studying Indian and Turkish music."

Time was ripe to make another Tribe record again... the offer came straight from the German label Intercord and basically the deal got signed over the phone... 'Pearls Before Swine' came to light through a vibe blending shaped into form by a kind of bass guitar "summit" between Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam, Doug Pinnick of King's X, Joey Vera of Armored Saint / Fates Warning, Richard Stuverud and Robbi Robb as harmony hinge to all inputs... and an amazing tour followed up, other audiences away, stunning reviews and press support; the band had the feeling they could take off again...

Then the axe just fell. Intercord went through personnel changes, in fact the whole music business got turned upside down and once again Tribe After Tribe was grounded in mid flight.

Three Fish did a second album called 'The Quiet Table' and toured America again to packed houses and critical acclaim. 'The Quiet Table' was heavily influenced by the band's short stay in Turkey and the live shows featured Robbi Robb on a variety of exotic instruments. But it was all that Robbi had learned from Tribe After Tribe's last European tour and his personal life experiences that fueled him with new energy and new ideas which brings us up to date with the release of the 'Enchanted Entrance': an album where music dives into mystic rhythms, heavy guitars, rock drums, ambient tones, dark textures, trance chants and deep groove.
